The design and construction of our new Macquarie Island research station is a step closer, after Deputy Secretary Matt Cahill and VEC Civil Engineering Contractor Representative, Julian Green, signed a contract for the work yesterday.
As Managing Contractor, VEC will now start a tender process to engage sub-consultants to design the new station, in consultation with the Australian Antarctic Division’s Macquarie Island Modernisation Project Team.
In October 2016, the Government committed up to $50 million to build the new research station and decommission the existing 70-year-old station. The aim is to build a smaller station, with simplified maintenance requirements and new technologies that allow for system improvements, including automation. The new station will ensure important scientific research and long-term monitoring programs can continue for at least another 50 years.
